Is this for you?

Couples come to counselling at every stage, and you do not need to be in crisis to benefit. It may help if:

  • Conversations keep turning into the same argument, or have stopped happening at all
  • Trust has been damaged and you are working out whether and how to rebuild it
  • A big change, such as children, illness, money pressures or a move, has pulled you in different directions
  • You feel more like flatmates than partners
  • You are deciding whether to stay together, and want to make that decision well

All couples are welcome here. As an LGBTQ+ affirmative counsellor, I work with couples of every kind.

What happens in a session

Both of you attend together, and my role is to hold a balanced space where each of you can speak and, just as importantly, be heard. I am not there to referee or take sides. We slow conversations down, notice the patterns underneath the arguments, and practise different ways of responding to each other. Couples often find that being genuinely listened to by their partner, sometimes for the first time in a while, changes the temperature of everything else.

Common questions

Do we both need to come to every session? Couples counselling works best with both partners present. If individual sessions would help alongside, we can discuss how to arrange that appropriately.

Can we do couples counselling online? No, couples sessions are in person only, at the practice in Leith. Individual counselling is available online.

What if we have already decided to separate? Counselling can still help. Some couples use sessions to part well, especially where children or shared lives are involved.

Will you take sides? No. My commitment is to the relationship conversation itself, and to both of you being heard fairly.
