When worry takes up too much room
By Lucy Wren, MNCPS (Acc.), accredited counsellor in Leith, Edinburgh.
Counselling for anxiety in Leith, Edinburgh and online. A calm space to understand what is driving it, and support to find steadier ground.
Is this for you?
Anxiety wears many faces. You might recognise:
- A mind that races ahead to worst cases and will not be reasoned with
- A tight chest, churning stomach, restlessness or trouble sleeping
- Avoiding things, such as calls, social plans or decisions, because the dread is easier to dodge than face
- Feeling on edge for no reason you can point to
- Being fine on the outside while paddling furiously underneath
Anxiety is one of the most common reasons people seek counselling, and feeling this way is nothing to be ashamed of.
How counselling can help
Counselling offers two things anxiety rarely gets: space and curiosity. Rather than only managing symptoms, we look at what your anxiety is about, where it learned its habits, and what it might be trying, clumsily, to protect. Alongside that understanding, practical CBT-informed tools can help interrupt anxious spirals, and mindfulness approaches, which I teach, can help you find moments of steadiness in the day. Clients have described leaving this work feeling stronger and calmer; everyone’s path is different, but you do not have to manage it alone.

What happens in a session
We start wherever you are that day. Some sessions are about making sense of a week; others go deeper into patterns and history. If practical techniques would help, we practise them together so they are usable when anxiety actually shows up. Nothing is rushed, and you stay in charge of the pace.
Common questions
Do I need a diagnosis of an anxiety disorder? No. You do not need any diagnosis or referral. If anxiety is interfering with your life, that is reason enough.
Will I have to face the things I am avoiding? Never before you are ready, and never as a demand. Any steps towards feared situations are agreed together, gradually.
Can counselling help alongside medication? Counselling can sit alongside any treatment your GP provides. Decisions about medication always belong with you and your doctor.
