Is this for you?

People come to bereavement counselling at very different points: weeks after a death, or years later when grief resurfaces. It may help if:

  • A bereavement feels too big, or too complicated, to process alone
  • You are coping outwardly but something inside has not moved
  • The people around you have gone back to normal and you have not
  • Your feelings are tangled, perhaps grief mixed with relief, anger or guilt, and hard to admit elsewhere
  • You are grieving a loss other than a death: a relationship, your health, a job, a future you had planned

All of these are real losses, and all of them belong here.

How counselling can help

Grief does not need fixing, and I will not try to fix yours. What counselling offers is a regular, unhurried hour where your loss can take up as much room as it needs. Saying things aloud, especially the complicated things, can help grief move rather than stay stuck. There is no expected sequence of stages and no point at which you are supposed to be over it. We go at the pace of your grief, not a textbook’s.

What happens in a session

Some sessions are full of memories and stories; some are quiet; some are angrier than you expected. All of that is welcome. I listen, I stay alongside you, and when it helps, I offer gentle ways of understanding what grief does to a person, which many people find steadying in itself.

Common questions

Is it too soon, or too late, for bereavement counselling? Neither really exists. Some people come immediately, others decades later. The right time is when you feel you want support.

What if I cry through the whole session? Then that is what the session was for. There is no version of grieving that is wrong in this room.

My loss was not a death. Does it still count? Yes. Endings of many kinds deserve to be grieved, and counselling can support that.
